Roped in by rodeo
LAKIN — It’s mid-morning on Thursday, and Deke Jennings pulls on his boots and puts on his hat before heading out to the 85-acre pasture next to his Lakin home.
From inside his pickup, he reads a list of names and points out the corresponding bulls in the pen.
The bulls stare at the vehicle, stamping their hooves into the ground and kicking up dust to keep away the flies. They almost look peaceful, but will change when they enter the bucking chutes at the Kearny County Fairgrounds for this weekend’s rodeo.
Grandparent buddy program bridging the generations
Delorse Prater has six children, 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Now, thanks to St. Dominic Catholic School’s new stewardship program, she gets to be a grandparent buddy, as well.
“Well, you see, I love my kids. The more the merrier,” she said Wednesday morning, while waiting for the students to walk over to Garden Valley Retirement Village.
Prater, along with 19 other Garden Valley residents, are part of the program that pairs sixth-graders from the school with a grandparent buddy.
